History

20.12.2009

A family-owned company with more than 60 years of tradition, having developed from small beginnings into an international swimwear specialist.

Paul Döbele, the father of Managing Partner and Senior Designer Maryan Mehlhorn, founded the company in Murg/Baden on 30 September, 1946. He and his wife, Pia, manufactured corsages and foundation garments and sold them to leading German retailers. Paul Döbele’s acquisition of and international patent for the spring steel support (also known as "butterfly support") were the beginning of the company's success story.

However, the women’s liberation movement of the late 1960s plunged the entire foundation garment industry into a deep crisis. The Döbeles searched for alternative products and invented the “swim corselet”. It was a combination of a corselet and a swimsuit with which the company convinced lingerie retailers to add swimwear to their product range. So the corselet and foundation garment manufacturer – even then an expert in large bust sizes – developed into a swimwear and beachwear specialist.

The four collection groups are produced with up to 1,000 different models per year, using the company’s own production facilities and certified production partners in Europe and Asia, with constant technical quality control by the Maryan Beachwear Group. Today, the company employs about 375 people, 135 of them in Germany. Added to that are about 500 temporary employees working in the partner production facilities.

Several awards are proof of the many years of success this family of entrepreneurs has enjoyed. In February 1999, the Maryan Beachwear Group received three out of five possible MERYL Awards, a European award for swimwear fashions. Other awards followed: The “Head of Success” Award by Lyon Mode City and the medal given by the trade fair host city, the Business Award of the State of Baden-Württemberg in 2009, and the SOUS Award “Sterne der Wäsche” (Stars of Lingerie) in the category “Best Swimwear Collection S/S 2010” in 2010. The award “Créateur de l’Année”, given on the occasion of the Paris Mode City 2010, shows the international appreciation for the designer Maryan Mehlhorn.
